Our Story

The father and mother purchased the land in 1961.

My mother's parents and grandparents were born in this area.

So it was, half Irish and half of Algonquin Indian, made that pair. My father was a high school technical shop teacher in Tilbury, Ontario Canada, so he had the two months off in the summer.

In 1975 my family cleared the land. It was dense bush so it took us the two months.

In 1976 my father borrowed $5,000 from my grandparents to build the cottage. They were so excited as they were going to have a bedroom in the land that they once called home. My father built a dock for my grandfather and he would be out there for hours with his lawn chair fishing. He couldn't have been happier.

But to make things more interesting, it rained every day that summer and the wet blue clay became worse than a ice rink. It wasn't uncommon to slip and slide all the way down the hills covering ourselves in blue clay.

There was no electricity. No generators. No running water. No telephone. Just candles and Coleman lanterns.

We would walk up the hill to bring our water down in containers and since there was no plumbing we built an outhouse.

The Ottawa River served as our bathtub.

My father worked so hard from early morning till 11pm at night, every day that summer. He had the physique of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He did everything by hand. He cut wood with a hand saw and made his own tools if, he didn't have them. Some family and friends donated their summer vacations, They packed up their trailers and drove to help my dad build his cottage. It was real teamwork and it was fun. By the end of August 1976 it was totally enclosed and so we headed back home for the start another new school year in September.

Ever since then my parents would return to their summer cottage.

In 2012, I renovated it, making it more into a four season home.

Since we did not live there, I decided to make it a rental when the family wasn't there.

And here we have it today, a beautiful chalet style cottage, very cozy with a big sense of home to it.
